Introduction of a New Jersey Personal Injury Attorney- Herbert F. Lawrence

In a series of interviews aimed at educating their audience about their participating attorneys, JurisQ Legal Network introduces Herbert F. Lawrence, a renowned New Jersey Personal Injury Attorney. Herbert F. Lawrence has fought for the clients’ rights for more than 51 years as a personal injury lawyer. His journey has been nothing but insightful and inspiring.

Let’s take a deep dive into his well-honed experience of personal injury while sharing some tids and bits from his personal life as well.

You are licensed to work in the state of New Jersey. Still, where do you practice?

Our practices located in Elizabeth, on Elizabeth Avenue in Union County.

How and when did you decide to become a lawyer?

I almost fell into the legal field by mistake.

In essence, my mother advised me to carry out that action. Naturally, you don’t want to listen to your mother when you’re a young man. However, when the time for making a decision drew nearer, something changed. Because it sounded like an interesting occupation and gave you a lot of options. Later, I realized that she was entirely correct. I actually applied to law school quite late and was fortunate enough to be accepted to Seton Hall University School of Law, which is a top-notch institution.

I had just finished my undergrad at Rutgers University. However, at least at the time, Rutgers produce more theorists and Seton Hall believed in practicing.

What led you to choose personal injury out of all the other areas of practice?

Well, we held a competition among all of the students, which would be around 130-140 students, at the law school, as do most law schools. And it essentially amounted to a putting up defense of you against all of your fellow students.
Everything was narrowed down to the final four competitors by that competition. The fortunate final four participants included me. They would argue one-on-one before real judges, which is how I got there. The winner of the competition would then be decided by the judges, who were often two or three in number.

I had to make a lot of arguments that I was fortunate enough to win since there were 130 capable students, a tough crowd indeed. Even though it was an appeal competition, I understood after I won that talking to juries was actually my strength rather than just talking to judges, and I made the decision to pursue trial work primarily in that area since, for one, I obviously appeared to be excellent at it. Additionally, it sounded like a ton of fun.

That must work brilliantly for as a personal injury lawyer. However, devoting as many years to this field as you have, how do you maintain that passion for advocating?

Well, I’m a fierce competitor. My partner is apparently fed up with my ever-competitive spirit. In the course of nature, we might have a group of people over to play a game that they’re interested in, and I’m always interested in trying to win.

According to my philosophy, there is no use in playing a game if you aren’t playing to win. I’m not implying that a legal dispute is a game. But there is a rivalry. And I detest losing, ever.

That’s the kind of attitude that one needs in someone who is fighting for them. Previously you’ve worked and won for some renowned insurance giants. What drove you to come and fight for the other side instead?

I worked for one of the top insurance providers in the country. And in Monmouth County, New Jersey, I tried each of their cases. That is what we did for two years. I ended up with the best one and lowest overall losing score after two years, which, while amazing, didn’t make me very happy because I don’t find it satisfying to save money for a large organization instead of giving it to someone who was harmed. As a result, I came to the realization that, despite my accomplishment, I didn’t really enjoy it. I also understood that, in contrast to what I was doing, I would be happier if I were to represent injured individuals and secure a favorable outcome for them. I gave up defending insurance companies, and instead I started fighting for the other side.
